Like most other writers, I'm having a hard time caring about writing at the moment. All my writing friends are having a hard time. It's never been harder to get published--the publishing industry itself is in crisis, with editors and agents leaving en masse. Higher education has been under attack for years, and writers in the humanities, in particular, are either being fired or overworked or both--or have been working in precarity for so long that they've lost their will to live, let alone write. Most people with the financial or political power to fight climate change either don't believe it exists, or believe it exists but would rather prioritise profit and plan to colonise Mars than actually change the way they make money. The majority of the US just voted for populist fascism, and apparently we're still fighting for the basic rights of reproductive health care at the same time that growing inequality is having devastating effects on our quality of life.
In the spirit of not completely giving up, I've started this blog on writing at a point where we're being encouraged to believe that writing doesn't really matter anymore. AI can do it. There's never been more 'content' available. The recent US election seems to indicate that reasoned debate and opinion no longer sways public opinion, if it ever did.
